London hacker house bets founders can win without burnout

Six founders in East London are running what they call the anti-San Francisco hacker house. Lift House, a six-story co-living space in a new development facing the water, launched in March 2026. Its residents journal on Sundays, play volleyball on Tuesdays, and reject the 72-hour coding sprints that define Silicon Valley founder culture.

"I don't expect the performative and over-the-top events will be a thing here," Rowan Aldean, 26, told TechCrunch. Aldean, who sold his previous company last year for millions, now runs an applied AI startup helping companies deploy agents. He and his wife Zahraa, 22, have lived in the house since May.

What makes Lift House different from SF hacker houses?

The contrast with San Francisco is intentional. Founders have described Bay Area hacker houses running illegally in warehouses, throwing full galas, or espousing 996 work culture with punishing multi-day sprints. Lift House wants none of it.

Aldean pointed to DeepMind as proof that London can produce world-class AI without the theatrics. "They've won Nobel prizes and built frontier innovation without any song and dance."

The house is part of a trend called "Londonmaxxing," where founders try to optimize everything the London tech scene offers. The ecosystem feels less showy than San Francisco, but the ambitions are identical: success, wealth, market domination.

The weekly routine: journaling, volleyball, piano

Residents set their own schedules, but the house has rituals. David Amor, 28, who runs a brain coaching company helping founders optimize performance, introduced Sunday journaling. The practice tracks time spent in nature, eating habits, and physical activity.

"I'm eating healthier, working out more, and sleeping more," said Luke, 27, who runs an AI marketing company. "I always make sure to have lunch now, which is something that is simple, but I wasn't doing before I lived here."

Tuesday evenings are for volleyball. The founders play on the house team in a local league. After dinner on other nights, Wan Ying L, 25, who recently left an AI startup and is working on a new idea, might play piano in the living room. Sometimes the group plays Catan or visits art exhibitions together.

Presence Plumb, 25, a tech strategist, hosts rooftop dinner parties. She serves dishes reflecting the house's nationalities, from Iraqi to Spanish, while founders, researchers, investors, and operators discuss tech trends. "It's a bit calmer, balanced, authentic in a way," Plumb said. "They don't want too much of that only startup tech bro vibe. They want a bit of balance."

Flexible stays, shared groceries, undisclosed rent

The timeline for living in Lift House is flexible. Some residents have stayed a month; others intend to stay at least six months. Residents buy their own groceries but often cook together and share ingredients. Cleaning duties are split. Everyone declined to share rent details.

London remains one of the few cities with any hacker houses at all. San Francisco has dozens, possibly hundreds, scattered around the city at any given time. Lift House is one of very few co-living founder houses in the UK capital.

London's AI funding boom provides the backdrop

The timing matters. London AI startups have raised $12 billion so far in 2026, representing over 80% of the city's total startup funding according to Dealroom. Six companies have raised more than $500 million: Wayve, Superintelligence, ElevenLabs, Recursive, Ineffable Intelligence, and Isomorphic Labs. The last three were all founded by DeepMind alumni.

That momentum is inspiring a new generation of London founders to take bigger swings, and Lift House is betting they can do it without burning out.
