  • Moonshot AI raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation, up from $4.3 billion just six months ago
  • The company's Kimi K2.6 is now the second-most used LLM on OpenRouter
  • Moonshot's annual recurring revenue topped $200 million in April 2026

A $3.9 Billion Six Months

Moonshot AI, the Beijing-based lab behind the Kimi series of large language models, has raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation. The round was led by Long-Z Investment, the venture arm of Chinese food delivery giant Meituan, according to a company spokesperson.

Other investors in the round include Tsinghua Capital, China Mobile, and CPE Yuanfeng. Huafeng Capital, which advised some participating investors, disclosed the funding details in a post.

The numbers tell a striking growth story. Moonshot was valued at $4.3 billion at the end of 2025. By early 2026, a $700 million raise more than doubled that to $10 billion. Now it sits at $20 billion. In total, the company has raised $3.9 billion over the past six months.

Why Open-Weight Models Are Winning Users

Moonshot's rise tracks a broader pattern. Companies and developers who want cheaper inference costs are turning to open-weight models from Chinese labs. The performance gap with Western rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic exists, but many users accept it for the cost savings.

The company's latest model, Kimi K2.6, is currently the second-most used LLM on OpenRouter, a popular distribution platform. Its predecessor, Kimi K2.5, made waves earlier this year when it nearly topped coding benchmarks, posting performance figures close to OpenAI and Anthropic's models at the time.

Moonshot AI was founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former researcher at Meta AI and Google Brain. The company quickly became one of China's most popular AI labs after Kimi K2.5 caught the attention of developers worldwide.

Revenue and Market Position

The funding isn't just about hype. Moonshot's annual recurring revenue topped $200 million in April, according to Huafeng Capital's post. That growth came from paid subscriptions and API usage.

Moonshot isn't alone in attracting capital. DeepSeek, arguably the most well-known Chinese AI lab, is reportedly in talks to raise outside funding for the first time at a $45 billion valuation.

Some rivals have already gone public. Zhipu AI trades in Hong Kong as Knowledge Atlas Technology and ended Thursday with a market cap of HK$434.7 billion, roughly $55.9 billion. MiniMax has also entered public markets.

The Open-Weight vs Closed-Model Tradeoff

Open-weight models let companies inspect, modify, and host models on their own infrastructure. This gives more control over costs and data privacy. The tradeoff is typically performance. Closed models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google tend to score higher on benchmarks.

But that gap is narrowing. Kimi K2.5's benchmark results showed Chinese labs are catching up quickly. For many applications, especially coding and routine tasks, the difference matters less than the price.

Moonshot AI is a Beijing-based AI lab founded in 2023 by former Meta AI and Google Brain researcher Yang Zhilin. It develops the Kimi series of open-weight large language models.

What is an open-weight model?

Open-weight models release their trained parameters publicly, allowing companies to inspect, modify, and host them on their own servers. This differs from closed models where only API access is provided.

How does Moonshot AI compare to OpenAI and Anthropic?

Moonshot's Kimi K2.5 nearly topped coding benchmarks and posted performance figures close to OpenAI and Anthropic models. The Kimi K2.6 is currently the second-most used LLM on OpenRouter.

Who invested in Moonshot AI's latest round?

The $2 billion round was led by Meituan's venture arm Long-Z Investment. Other investors include Tsinghua Capital, China Mobile, and CPE Yuanfeng.
